January 31, 2015
I neglected to mention that 5/6 is offering tutoring to any students after school on Monday and Wednesday from 3:30 - 4:30 pm. You need to sign the permission slip and/or let your child's teacher know that you would like for them to attend. It is FREE! The only exception will be the week of February 23 it will be on Monday 2/23 and Tuesday 2/24. Monday February 16 is a holiday so, NO SCHOOL! The week of March 16th is spring break, so no tutoring that week. We will tutor all the way up to April 8, 2015. We hope you will allow your child to stay for tutoring on these days.
Yearbook order forms have been passed out as well. The yearbook will cost $18 and the orders are due by Friday, February 27, 2015. Students will need to pre-order if they would like a yearbook. Please make checks payable to ASU Prep. Thank you!
No school on February 16, 2015 - President's Day! We will be having PRIDE on February 13, 2015. We will let you know this week what activities we will have during PRIDE.
Thank you for your support. Please email me if you have questions.
Enjoy the rain!
best regards,
Mrs. Biggs

February is HERE!
January 31, 2015
February is here officially tomorrow! The school year seems to be FLYING BY!
All students should have brought home and 8 1/2 X 11 white piece of paper regarding our walking field trip to ASU on February 6, 2015. This paper is from ASU and it is a waiver. Unfortunately, if you don't sign it and return it your child will not be able to attend the field trip with us. There will be alternative work for them to complete here at school. We will be leaving by 8:45 am. and returning in time for lunch. You do not need to make special arrangements for lunch, because we will follow our normal lunch schedule. I will notify you on Monday if your name was drawn as a chaperone.
Academic Enrichment will be Wednesday, February 25th from 3:30 - 5:00 pm. If you donated to the event, THANK YOU! We are excited to extend our learning day with a variety of activities. We hope you will put it on your schedule.
Science Camp is May 20-22, 2015. We are going to Chapel Rock in Prescott, AZ. The camp is also called Aspen Creek Outdoor School. Thank you for all that have made full payments and tax credit donations! And, thank you for those who have made a donation towards students who would like to go but aren't financially able. Thank you to those families who have been making payments! Every little bit adds up and before you know it you will be paid in full also. It is going to be a great opportunity for students, chaperones, and teachers! Parents - if you have requested to be a chaperone, please turn in your fingerprint clearance card as soon as you receive it. We will be selecting chaperones by spring break so that you can make arrangements to have those days available. Student's cost $140 and Parents $110. If you are not planning on sending your child, please contact Mrs. Biggs ASAP.
Spring Break begins the week of March 16th.
Our state testing will begin the last week of March/first week of April. April 3, 2015 is Good Friday, but it is not a school holiday. Your child will have the state test at least one day a week. We will publish the schedule so that you may put it on your calendar. We are requesting that your child be in attendance on the test dates and not leave early for any appointments. The state dictates the time frame when we administer the tests. We will let you know the dates as soon as we have them on the calendar. We are finalizing the school wide schedule for AZMerit(state test) this week.
The 5th and 6th grade students have been struggling as a whole with a few behaviors. One is talking during instruction time. All the teachers have said the talking is an issue. We explain to students that they are here to learn and when an adult is speaking to be respectful and not talk. There are a lot of activities that include student conversation, but students should not be interrupting instruction time. Some students are struggling with good sportsmanship on the fields during recess and PE. We are having discussions about being respectful, choosing our words carefully, and living the golden rule. I remind students that they are responsible for their own actions and words they use with each other. It is easy to get upset and say something in haste that we later regret. It takes a conscious effort to stop and think about our actions and words before we act on them. We appreciate all that you do at home to reinforce and strengthen these behaviors.
Be sure to check out the upcoming sports' tryouts.

Welcome 2015!
January 20, 2015
Welcome back to school and Happy New Year! It is exciting to welcome a new year, to make new year's resolutions, to have an optimistic outlook for what the future holds, and to embrace change. I hope your families had a wonderful winter break, and great three day weekend.
I passed out thank you notes before I left for winter break. I hope your child gave it to you. If you didn't receive the thank you for your very thoughtful gifts before our winter holiday, please accept my thank you now. I am thankful for the kindness and generosity you have shown me. I am always in awe at how thoughtful families can be during the holidays. You are amazing and wonderful, and I thank you so much for thinking of me! Thank you!
We have jobs in science class. Students had to apply by writing a letter of their qualifications. The students that were hired help out during science, and they receive a pay into their checking accounts on Fridays for their extra help. We love our helpers!
Thursday, January 22, we will be going on a field trip to see "Sadako." The permission slips were sent out before winter holiday. If you aren't sure if your child has paid the $14 ($6 for the bus, $8 for the play), please contact Mrs. Caruthers. If you aren't sure if you are chaperoning, please contact your child's homeroom teacher. (1st hour teacher) As a reminder, we do expect exceptional behavior during the performance. All students/chaperones need to bring a sack lunch and drink. We are stopping at Discovery Park for lunch and recess after the play.
Friday, January 23, is 100th day of school. Students can wear shirts with 100 things put onto the shirt. They can't just wear a regular dress day shirt and say "it has 100 pieces of thread or 100 stripes" unless of course the 100 things are actually 100 pieces of thread or exactly 100 stripes that have been added to the shirt. The purpose is to have 100 things and not just a free dress day. They can also wear "non Khaki pants" if they bring $1 to their homeroom teachers. The money collected is going toward a new trophy case for the school. We are very excited about this!
Friday, February 6, is a walking field trip to ASU School of Engineering. Your child was given an information note to bring home. There was a spot for parents to sign if they are interested in help chaperoning. We will be back in time for lunch, so students can still buy lunch that day.
How are your science camp payments coming along? Have you turned in copies your fingerprint clearance cards? If you haven't paid anything towards science camp, have you let me know? If your child isn't attending science camp there will be a teacher here to have regular classes. A HUGE shout out to parents that have been making little payments every month, because a little payment every couple of weeks adds up to having enough money for science camp. If any of you would like to make an additional payment to help another student in need, please let me know!
Academic Enrichment, which is an after school activity, is coming up in February! Look for the date!
I hope your 2015 will be a great year of good health and prosperity for you and your families.
Best to you,
Mrs. Biggs
