Post 9/11

September 14, 2015

Hello 5/6 families!

I have shown students "The Boat Lift of 9/11" narrated by Tom Hanks.  If you haven't seen it, I would recommend it.  I replaced science trivia on September 11 with this video.  I ask the students if their parents have talked to them before I show it.  I DO NOT go into a lot of details or opinions about 911.  If students don't want to watch it because it makes them feel uncomfortable I have them grab a book.  I also talk about being respectful as we watch it and we talk about crying.  Crying is a part of how our body functions because of sadness, joy, scared, worried, etc.  The video focuses on people who saw a need and helped out the people trying to get out of New York City on September 11, 2001.  It is positive and amazing.  There are no graphic images that are not appropriate.  We also talk about fighting evil by doing good.  Doing good in their homes, at school, and in their communities.  We touch on being law abiding citizens, participating in elections, and making sure we vote.  We also pay tribute to all the men and women who are in the military and making sure to say Thank you  for their service.  You can find this video on YouTube.

This week in science everyone will have a vocabulary quiz.  You can find a list of words on my weebly.  Look for a paperclip on the day, and the paper with the words will pop up.

We are finishing up one experiment but moving into several others!  The majority of work will be completed in class.

If you signed up on Volunteer Spot, please send in your donations.  For some reason I am short chocolate bars.  I requested 6 regular size bars, but students are bringing in different amounts.  I am wondering if they are getting eaten before they get to me? LOL

Also, if you have an extra shoe box with a lid, please send it in with your child this week.

Thank you for all that you do to support your children!

Have a great week!

yours in science,
Mrs. Biggs
