February 6, 2017

Hello Families!

I hope you are enjoying the Full Moon!  It is amazing right now and the size looks huge!!!

Question:
Why does the moon look so large when it first breaks our horizon only to look like the size has shrunk as it moves across our night sky?

Does the moon rise?  Or does the earth move?

What do you think?

We are finishing up the Periodic Table as part of our Matter unit - because it matters.  That joke never gets old - except to your children!  I LOVE the periodic table because it is always met with a HUGE amount of enthusiasm!  And, kids are SO smart!  They are able to make sense of it and understand all the bits and pieces of how it is organized.  They are SO SMART that I have them put the table together from scratch using the elements that only have tiny bits of information.  It is A-MAZING what they can do!  It is by far one of MY favorite science activities.

We are moving into Human Body.  Sixth graders will be organized into Medical Clinics and become specialists.  Each student will need to pass a board exam, become a Dr., and participate in their clinic.  It is a great learning opportunity and the students do GREAT work!  Fifth graders will also be a specialist on a system in the body and create a life-size human with a team.  We DO NOT work with the reproductive system at this age, and all humans created are neither male or female.

We don't seem to have very many things to put into our silent auction baskets.  :(  If you have something you would like to donate to either an Outdoor Fun basket or a Family Fun basket we would be HAPPY to add it to our baskets.  These will be auctioned off at our spring carnival at the end of February.

Valentine's Day - celebrations in each foundation class.  The best way to send in Valentines is to sign your name and leave the envelope blank, unless of course you are sending a Valentine to a friend and you know their name.  We will let students share Valentines during Foundation class.

We are hoping EVERYONE will be able to attend science camp May 17-19, 2017 which is a Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.  Please keep sending in payments.  Get your fingerprint Clearance card if you haven't yet.  It is going to be educational AND Fun!!  Your kids will have an amazing time!

Happy Valentine's Day.  I LOVE teaching, and it is an honor to spend the day with your children!

yours in science,
Mrs. Biggs
