Wow!  Where has this school year gone?  It seems to have FLOWN by!

Thank you for helping us get your children to Science Camp.  It was a great learning opportunity and team building for all of us.  The food was good, the weather was perfect, the leaders amazing, chaperones were great, and the classes were fun.  An overall GREAT experience!

Yearbook signing on Thursday which is a half-day.

End of the year Breakfast is Thursday as well.  I am making pancake batter.  I'm in need of parent volunteers to help cook, serve, and clean up.  If you are available we will put you to work.  Thank you for making this happen.  We serve 6th graders first and say good bye.  We serve 5th graders second and say HELLO and WELCOME new 6th graders.

We will continue to stay busy this week working and learning.  Report cards will come home this week, so watch for them.

Don't forget to pick up any meds you may have sent up to science camp.  You will also need to make arrangements with Miss G regarding any medications she has for your child in the health office.

I hope you have a wonderful summer!  Spend time with your kids!  Enjoy the summer.  Play.  Bring back the games and fun you had as a child and share them with your child!  Experience new things.  Try new foods.  Take a day trip.  Build a fort.  Visit the library.  Donate your time to a charity.  Clean out your closets and dressers and donate your clothes you no longer wear.  Write a letter.  Cook together.  Challenge your child to read and practice math.  Watch a movie together.  Go outside at night and look at the stars.  We live on this amazing planet!

A million thank you-s for all of your support, donations, emails, cards, and gifts.  You all have been so kind and generous.  I'm grateful and honored to be a part of your lives.  I will miss you 6th grade students and families.  I wish you the best in your academic journey and personal lives.  You are capable of anything you put your mind to do.  Work hard.  Be your best.  Be Kind.  Be Smart.

Welcome back 6th graders.  Let's make this the BEST BIGGS year yet!  We have so many things to learn and experience.  I'm excited to begin another school year.  Remember to be kind to our incoming 5th graders.  Work hard.  Be your best.  Be Kind.  Be Smart.

Have a wonderful summer break!  Enjoy every single minute!

Biggs BlogApril 10, 2017

Well, this is the week we've been talking about since August - Sheep Eyeball Dissection!

Students will be working in pairs.  We've watched a professional dissect the eyeball.  We will do a little more background reading, discuss lab safety, discuss respect for living creatures, discuss lab safety some more, and complete our dissection.  Students will be looking for specific things during the dissection.  We've talked about if anyone starts to feel nauseous that they can step outside the classroom.  If a student doesn't want to work on the dissection, an alternative assignment will be given.  We WILL NOT be using scalpels.  Students will be filling in their data and discoveries and also adding illustrations.  We are all very excited for this amazing opportunity to learn more about the sheep eyeball!

AZMerit testing continues on Tuesday and Wednesday during 1st block. All students will be taking the AZMerit Math Part 1 and Part 2 in their foundation classrooms during 1st block.  Students are allowed back to the classrooms at 8:00 am on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Students may brink in candy/gum/snack for the testing session.  Thank you for all of the snacks/treats for AZMerit testing!

Thank you for reaching out to me with any questions regarding your child's assignments/tests.  The most recent Human Body test is complete.  Students were given a sample of the actual test along with the answers to help them prepare, review, and practice.  All the answers were on my Weebly.  Students were also told that there would be no retakes for this test, because they had all of the answers.

Science Camp is May 17-19 in Prescott, AZ.  If you haven't made contact with me to let me know your child IS NOT going, please contact me ASAP.  Parent meeting and chaperone meeting will be on Tuesday, May 2 at 5:30.  The parent meeting will be first followed by the chaperone meeting.  At least one parent will be required to attend the parent meeting.  There will a couple of additional forms given out that night that will be required to be filled out and turned in.  We will begin working on cabin assignments/chaperone assignments/and class assignments.  All students will participate in all of the classes/activities at science camp.  If you would like further information about Science camp please visit my Weebly:

rbiggsasuprep.weebly.com

Science Camp is held at Chapel Rock and called Aspen Creek Outdoor School.  If you haven't signed your child up and you would like them to go PLEASE contact Mrs. Biggs ASAP.

ILP conferences to be held on April 20 and 21st.

The final quarter for Science will cover cells and organisms, living things in their environment, plants, humans and animals, and food chains.  Keep an eye out for attachments under the "W" on my planbook on my weebly.  I always show the students what is attached so they know where to find additional information for Science.

Thank you, thank you for ALL that you do to support your child's education.  It shows in their work, projects, assignments, behavior, friendships, and interactions with adults.  I appreciate you!  I enjoy your children everyday!  Thank you for sharing them with me! 😀

Hello Science Families!

Well, our baby doves have hatched!  I've been checking in on them everyday.  In case your student hasn't shared, we have a dove that set up house in the water fountain outside my door.  Two eggs.  She is patient and very protective.  A little information about our newest members of ASU Prep.

Fledglings: From the time they hatch, doves leave the nest at about 11 or 12 days old. When they begin to self-regulate their body temperature, the parents no longer brood them at night. If a baby is reluctant to leave the nest after 12 days, the parents will often keep watch nearby but refuse to feed it.

Elven or twelve days will put us toward the end of our first week back from school.  Nature is amazing!

5th Grade will finish up their posters when we return on Monday and Tuesday - Day 1.  We will also review the study guide for the test.  The answers are on my weebly.  If your student has not taken the test yet, then their test will be on Day 2 for their schedule.  Please reach out to me if you have questions

*Each student should have turned in the 5+ sentence summary of how their system works.
*Each student should have turned in their 5+ interesting facts - different than their summary.
*Each student should have completed their illustration of their system.
*Each student has completed their system on their group human body poster
*Each group will present to their cohort.  Each student is responsible for sharing their portion of the    poster.  Each member of the group will complete an evaluation of the group work and group presentation to be turned in to Mrs. Biggs.

**All work must include the student name, cohort #, and foundation teacher name.

6th Grade will finish up their Medical Clinics on Friday, March 24.  Any student that has not completed the Physiology Test or board exam needs to make contact with Mrs. Biggs immediately. Answers for the study guide are on my weebly.  All tests need to be made up by Wednesday, March 22, 2017.  No exceptions.

*Each student should have turned in their specialty illustration
*Each student should have turned in their 3D model
*Each student should have passed their board exam with an 8 or higher.  Retakes are available until      the board exam is passed.
*Each student should have taught their system to their medical clinic
*Each CLINIC should have completed their medical clinic sign and turned it in
*Each student should have passed their physiology exam.  Each clinic must have 100% of its doctors receive a passing grade for the physiology exam in order to receive patients.
*Each clinic will receive 2 patients to study, resolve the patient challenges, and prepare a poster or something similar to share when all the clinics conduct medical rounds on Day 1 for the week of March 27, 2017.  No exceptions.

We will be practicing and reviewing perimeter and area at the beginning of class each day.  We will also be reading informational text at the beginning of class each day.

Please watch for a slip of paper to come home regarding science camp, payments received, chaperone information, fingerprint clearance cards, etc.  If you haven't signed your child up to attend science camp, it isn't too late!  Please contact Mrs. Biggs ASAP for more information!

Hello 5/6 Families,

We have begun our Human Body Unit!  Both 5th and 6th graders will be learning/reviewing the systems of the body.  Nervous, Muscular, Skeletal, Circulatory, Digestive, and Respiratory.

5th Grade -
--Research Groups and constructing a Life Size Model of the Human Body.
--Students divided up the tasks for these systems: brain/nervous, respiratory, circulatory, digestive, skeletal, muscular.  Each student is responsible for one of these systems.
--Each student conducts research on their system, summarizes how their system works in a minimum of 5 complete sentences, and includes a minimum of 5 interesting facts.
--Each student also includes an illustration.
--All the students in each group must have this information on the same size paper so the papers can be combined to create a book.
--All students have the task sheet to refer to for their poster and for their personal portion.
--The answers to the study guide are included under the W on their cohort under academics on my weebly.

6th Grade - Medical Clinics
Students are divided into medical clinics during their science class.  Each student is considered a medical doctor and they are now working on their specialty.  Each clinic is responsible for creating their Medical Clinic Sign - including all Dr. names, specialty, name of clinic, and colors included.  A slogan or personally designed art work is encouraged!  The areas of specialty:
Pulmonologist, Cardiologist, Orthopedic Surgeon, Gastroenterologist, Neurologist, and Infectious Disease.
--Each student is responsible for learning his specialty and passing a 10 point board exam scoring an 8 or higher.
--Each student creates a 3D model for their specialty following directions on their information sheet.
--Each student creates an illustration for their specialty following directions on their info sheet.
--Each student shares and teaches this information to their medical clinic.
--Every student in the medical clinic is required to pass a Physiology Test and score 80% or higher.
--Once every student has passed the Board Exam and Physiology Test, the medical clinic will receive several patient cases to review and problem solve.
--Each medical clinic will present their findings to the other medical clinics.

All information required for exams in 5th and 6th grade will be on my weebly listed under each cohort.

Hello 5/6 Science Families!

We have had a very good week, but it also feels like it has been a week with a lot of extra days!  I think I can speak for everyone and correctly say that WE ARE READY FOR A 3 DAY WEEKEND!

Enjoy your holiday and time with your family.  I will be heading to my home state, the great State of Texas to help my mother pack and move to a new home.

We have finished up our matter unit.  We took a test.  We finished our puzzle.  All of the elements that students created are past due after today!  Your child should have turned in their element with the rubric.  Points are deducted if the project is late.

We are moving on to the Human Body.  We discuss pretty much everything with the exception of reproduction,  It isn't part of the standard for 5th and 6th grade.  Unfortunately at this age when you start talking about the reproduction systems a lot of giggling takes place.

6th graders will be working in groups of six and organizing a medical clinic.  Each student in the group of six will have their own specialty. They will take a test over this specialty, create a 3-D model, teach the other five in their group, and the entire group will take one more test before I give them a "patient" to treat.

5th graders will also be working in groups of six and will be creating a 3-D outline of the human body/body systems.  Each student will be creating to scale part of their system on this 3-D model.  Students will bring in their own supplies to create their human.  These replicas will be gender neutral.

NEEDS:  supplies for Human Body projects (stuff you have around your house)
bubble wrap
yarn - red or blue
tissue paper
balloons
tubing
yarn that has shape and texture
foam trays
toilet paper or paper towel tubing
Q-tips
paint
any lightweight items that might look great as part of a body system!
Be creative !
Label your donations.

Science Camp - Please send in  your payments and permission slip forms.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for all the sweet Valentine's treasures and cards.  I am so grateful!  I left school feeling very loved.  Thank you for your kindness and sharing with your children the joy in giving.  I loved the handmade cards!  It was the sweetest day!

School Carnival this Friday, February 24 from 5:00 - 8:00 pm! Pre-sale on tickets and wristbands all week!

Have a great three day weekend!  Enjoy your time with your family.

Mrs. Biggs

Hello Families!

I hope you are enjoying the Full Moon!  It is amazing right now and the size looks huge!!!

Question:
Why does the moon look so large when it first breaks our horizon only to look like the size has shrunk as it moves across our night sky?

Does the moon rise?  Or does the earth move?

What do you think?

We are finishing up the Periodic Table as part of our Matter unit - because it matters.  That joke never gets old - except to your children!  I LOVE the periodic table because it is always met with a HUGE amount of enthusiasm!  And, kids are SO smart!  They are able to make sense of it and understand all the bits and pieces of how it is organized.  They are SO SMART that I have them put the table together from scratch using the elements that only have tiny bits of information.  It is A-MAZING what they can do!  It is by far one of MY favorite science activities.

We are moving into Human Body.  Sixth graders will be organized into Medical Clinics and become specialists.  Each student will need to pass a board exam, become a Dr., and participate in their clinic.  It is a great learning opportunity and the students do GREAT work!  Fifth graders will also be a specialist on a system in the body and create a life-size human with a team.  We DO NOT work with the reproductive system at this age, and all humans created are neither male or female.

We don't seem to have very many things to put into our silent auction baskets.  :(  If you have something you would like to donate to either an Outdoor Fun basket or a Family Fun basket we would be HAPPY to add it to our baskets.  These will be auctioned off at our spring carnival at the end of February.

Valentine's Day - celebrations in each foundation class.  The best way to send in Valentines is to sign your name and leave the envelope blank, unless of course you are sending a Valentine to a friend and you know their name.  We will let students share Valentines during Foundation class.

We are hoping EVERYONE will be able to attend science camp May 17-19, 2017 which is a Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.  Please keep sending in payments.  Get your fingerprint Clearance card if you haven't yet.  It is going to be educational AND Fun!!  Your kids will have an amazing time!

Happy Valentine's Day.  I LOVE teaching, and it is an honor to spend the day with your children!

yours in science,
Mrs. Biggs
